Vacation is a time for relaxing and not worrying about your home. Worrying someone might be casing your house can put a damper on the enjoyment of being away from it.

Below are six things you can do to have peace of mind while away from home.

1. Hold Mail and Deliveries

It’s easy to put a temporary hold on your mail. The US Postal Service provides a website just for that purpose: holdmail.usps.com/holdmail.

If you still receive newspapers, be sure to contact them to stop deliveries when you’re on vacation. Also, if you receive ongoing deliveries from companies, notify them of your plans.

2. Appear As If You’re Home

Automate your presence. Automatic timers can make it appear as if someone is still turning on lights and watching TV throughout the day and night.

3. Ask for Neighborly Help

Recruit neighbors or a friend to stop by to pick up deliveries. Invite your neighbors to park their car in your driveway. If you’re heading out of town for a time, hire a lawn service to take care of your yard. An unsightly yard can be a sign you’re not around.

4. Stop Being Social

While this might be challenging for some people, don’t post about your vacation plans and don’t share photos of your fun activities while on vacation. Social media is an easy way for burglars to find out about your away-from-home plans.

5. Keep An Eye On Home While Away

Remote monitoring can be set up so you can be notified of any activity around and in your home.

6. Keep Valuables Secure

Collect your valuables and important paperwork and store them in a safe location—either in a home safe or offsite.
